Considering Your Choices

If you have a positive pregnancy test, you have choices to consider. You have the legal right to choose the outcome of your pregnancy. The key word is "choice." You must have options to choose from in order to make a choice.

Real empowerment comes when you find the strength and resources necessary to make your best choice. Here are the options for you to consider.

Parenting
Choosing to continue your pregnancy and to parent is very challenging. But with the support of caring people, parenting classes and other resources, many women find the help they need to make this choice.

Here are some questions to consider...
  • I may not be able to afford to live on my own. Where can I live with my baby?
  • Where can I get help with baby supplies (clothing, furniture, diapers and formula) and maternity clothes?
  • How do I get financial support from the father of my child?
  • Where can I get job training or financial aid to attend college?
  • If parenting does not work out, will I still be able to make an adoption plan?
  • I'm not sure I will make a good parent. Where can I get parenting classes and support to be a good mom?
We can talk with you about your concerns, offer you support through our Center as well as give you community referrals. Our services include parenting classes, baby supplies, maternity clothing and long term support. We are here to help you succeed.

Adoption
You may decide to make an adoption plan for your child. Each year thousands of women in America make this choice. This loving decision is often made by women who first thought abortion was their only way out.

Here are some questions to consider...
  • When can I begin the adoption process?
  • May I choose a family for my baby?
  • May I see and hold my baby after birth?
  • When do I sign the legal documents for the adoption?
  • How much will my child know about me?
  • What rights does the birth father have?
  • May I have communication or contact with my child after the adoption?
Our staff and volunteers are trained to talk with you about adoption and will give you referrals to adoption agencies. We are not an adoption agency and we do not facilitate adoptions. However, we can offer you support during your pregnancy and after the adoption placement.

Abortion
Abortion is not just a simple medical procedure. For many women, it is a life changing event with significant physical, emotional and spiritual consequences. Most women who struggle with past abortions say that they wish they had been told all of the facts about abortion.

Remember - no person will be required to live with the consequences of this decision as much as you will. If your partner or parents are pressuring you to make a quick decision, explain your needs and try to involve them in counseling to explore your positive options. You have the right to continue with this pregnancy.

Here are some questions to consider...
  • Can anyone make me have an abortion?
  • What are the potential physical risks?
  • What are the potential emotional and psychological risks?
  • What types of abortion are available?
  • How far along am I?
  • Where can I get a free ultrasound to help me make my decision?
We can help you understand your choices and help you make an informed decision. You may see this unplanned pregnancy as a major roadblock in your life. Be encouraged to know that many women in the same situation have found the necessary help and resources to make positive choices and realize their dreams.
